Everton plotting move to sign one of the best players in the Championship

Everton are keen to strengthen in January and could now be set to rival a number of sides in the race for an in-demand captain who is shining for an EFL Championship outfit.

Everton continue to progress after Nottingham Forest victory

The Toffees have been on an encouraging upward trajectory this season and have shown no sign of slowing down under David Moyes, even if they have endured a mixed run of results during the festive period.

Following their goalless draw at Burnley, Everton followed that up with an impressive victory over Nottingham Forest and moved themselves closer to contention for European qualification.

Speaking post-match, Moyes stated that the result was one of the best achieved since his return to Merseyside, paying tribute to his depleted squad.

He said: “Not only this season but I think one of the better results we’ve had since I’ve come into the job because of how depleted we are. We didn’t have enough senior players on the bench to make too many changes.

I thought Nottingham Forest played well, but we defended well and took our moments when we got them. We didn’t play particularly well against Burnley, but today we did. I always saw tonight being a really difficult game.”

With the transfer window open, Moyes will be in the market for reinforcements, and Roma striker Artem Dovbyk is on the Toffees’ radar to bolster their frontline.

Nevertheless, AFCON and injury issues have left Everton short of quality in the middle of the park, creating gaps that need to be plugged if opportunities arise in January.

Now, they may have found a solution, though competition for the player in question is likely to be fierce as Premier League clubs search for transfer solutions.

Labelled “outstanding” by Tom Cleverley, Louza has two and a half years left on his deal at Vicarage Road and it remains to be seen whether Watford would be open to cashing in on him mid-season, especially given his status as club captain.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Charly Alcaraz’s absences have forced the Toffees to recall Harrison Armstrong from Preston North End, albeit this is likely a temporary measure until another operator within the engine room is recruited.

Louza has created 49 chances on league duty this term, per Fotmob, and if he were to move to the Hill Dickinson Stadium, there is no doubt that he would be someone who could push for a place in Moyes’ starting line-up.
